An Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) pushes through the long grass in search of tasty ants. Echidnas are such a unique animal, and together with the platypus, are the world's only monotremes, or egg-laying mammals. I photographed this guy last week while I was at Mount Rouse near Penhurst. You have to be very patient with Echidnas, as when they see or hear you coming they quickly put their head down and burrow into the soil. After sitting quietly and motionless for a few minutes this guy actually walked right up to me and continued looking for ants - however, the sound of the camera shutter was enough to make him curl up for a second or two.
